I Love the IA Summit

And I do and so do many others. It’s about community in the end. People that help you do a better job in the world. This video was put together to encourage others to take their snapshots of why they love the IA Summit. Karl Fast asked everyone to do this at the end of the event this year.

We put this together to encourage and inspire. Let the energy from the event live on and keep helping us to do good work.

A Slight Shift In Perspective

Semantics really can change the way you look at the world. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a motto. It’s the Teddy Roosevelt quote, “do the best you can, with what you have, where you are.”

It occurs to me of late that maybe this just isn’t good enough anymore. Of course I’ve been inspired by a new sense of accountability in our nation and some recent personal experiences. I see people stepping up and making a difference. So, I’ve decided it’s time for a new motto.

Still working on what it is but it’s inspired by a notion that I can change the world and I can make a difference. (thanks @whitneyhess)

Some candidates:

“Be the change that you want to see in the world” -Mahatma Gandhi

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.” -Albert Einstein

and I’m especially liking this one:

-”We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”-Albert Einstein (again)

It’s important to be aware of all that is changing around us. As a professional developing these experiences, it is absolutely imperative to me. I want to come at it from the right mindset, because there is much work to do.

Women Speakers & Leaders at User Experience Event

The annual Information Architecture Summit is an event that would make Ada Lovelace proud. The practice of Information Architecture and building User Experiences draws on the two worlds from which she came, art and science.

At the end of the conference, Karl Fast-who was there to represent his wife, Samantha Bailey, got up and spoke. She was at home with their newborn and her mother-in-law.

Karl called for everyone to share the reasons they love the IA Summit on Flickr. I imagined that if Ada was there, this is what her sign would have said.

The event occurred this past weekend and it was a very impressive line up of speakers in the technology field. Over 30 different women presented or spoke or participated in pre-conference sessions as leaders.

They were all amazing and it was very encouraging to see so many solid thoughts, themes and work being done by women in my field.

At the end of the event, any participant can come up to the microphone and comment on what they thought of the event. One person that chose to get up and share their thoughts pointed out the fact that the conference had so many women speakers and that he was very happy to see it. The conference chairs were also women. Samantha Bailey was the chair and I (Jennifer Bohmbach) was the co-chair of the event. We were very proud that our balance of speakers was so strong.

Remix Culture in the Real World

Sometimes it’s the little things in life that make us happy. I was busy perusing my slide:ology book in preparation for some upcoming presentations. I also had a Gaiam yoga catalog on my desk. I noticed that some of shirts in the catalog would fit the figure on the page nicely.

So after a little scissor action, I got this:

I like my customization. :) I think my work with the internet medium, where it is much more common to use pieces and part of items has led me in this direction. It actually manifested itself with non digital, in real life objects.

I also think it’s a great seniment for the person thinking about giving a presentation. The notion of relaxation is key to being able to give people a great presentation. Buddha says it’s all going to be ok!
