Linked In

I really like the site linkedin. It’s got a nice professional feel to it and many of my friends and colleagues have joined so it seems like it’s kind of become a little bit of a defacto standard (for now, everything seems so temporary these days….)

They just added (or maybe i just noticed) a way to import your addresses from another account (google, yahoo, etc) and match up your contacts with linked in members. I really like this because they fixed something that I always felt was a problem. My addresses were already in another tool, finding people on linked in to invite them just became much easier and leverages the work I’ve already done building my contact list somewhere else. Chalk another one up for sharing. Thanks linkedin.

Two Great Years

Today is my 2nd anniversary at my job. I like milestones like these as they give us a way to quantify/measure and a way to look back. In many ways I can’t believe it’s already been two years. I also feel as if I’ve been at this job much longer than that. The thing is, it keeps getting better. Many of the jobs I’ve had in the past have either bored me or worn me down at this point at the 2 year mark, but not this job. I am continually challenged and engaged. That’s the secret to low turnover, keep people interested.

So on to my third year I go. Wish me luck. :)

SEC and Blogs

The CEO of my company, Sun Microsystems has been asked to speak to the SEC.

It’s happening because he asked a question on his blog. Why couldn’t companies use blogs to disseminate information. “The Commission should make clear that options such as adequately noticed website postings, fully accessible webcasts and electronic mail alerts would satisfy Regulation FD.”

The chairman of the SEC responded to the blog post in a comment (and by mail). Important and amazing conversations are happening out here, right in public.

I feel lucky work for someone like that. He asked a question and he’s changing things-pushing evolution in communication because of our new tools.

A Change At Sun

I work at Sun Microsystems. Today was an amazing event. Scott McNealy chose Jonathan Schwartz to be the Sun CEO.

I’m so lucky. Sun is a unique place. Scott is a unique and brave man. He created something beyond a company. He created jobs, something with a worldwide reach, something with integrity. I am proud to work here. I actually feel like my job makes a difference because I support a company that is choosing to behave this way. Not just a great company, but a good company. A company that does good in the world.

I thank Scott and feel so honored to have had a part in his vision. I’m excited about his choice. Jonathan is the right person at the right time. He’s going to lead us well.

It may seem strange for someone to be so emotional about their place of employment, but darnit, Sun rocks!

The Thing About California Is….

that they have winter here too. I was pretty excited to go to California on a work trip in January. I mean getting out of the midwest is usually considered a very good thing. It’s not cold here, but it’s rainy and cloudy. It’s winter here too. It’s more of a bummer than you might think.

However, it’s definitely helped me reaffirm that I really like where I live. Minnesota is pretty great. I don’t mind weather. I would actually really miss it. And I do have a chance of seeing the sun more frequently during those long, cold, winter months. And I’m pretty sure, I won’t have to worry about the ground underneath me in Minnesota. Although there was an earthquake in Morris, MN. (where I went to school, but not WHEN I went to school)

“It’s all about the level of risk you are willing to live with….” said a friend. I agree with that. I’m willing to live with the outside chance of a random tornado that I’ve been warned about well in advance or a nasty thunderstorm dropping some big branches on my house as opposed to the things I’d be constantly worried about if I lived in California. We all make choices. That’s my choice and I’m stickin to it.

Listening to the GumptionStream—I Mean GumptionRadio

Possum Dixon…followed by Fever from Pink Panther’s Penthouse Party Mix and the beats go on.

It’s the beginning of something. I can listen to a music stream that I create from anywhere on the network via a web app.

Hmmmmmmmmm. The possibilities…….

There is more to this story. I feel it will unfold in the near term. I’m not sure how it will unfold. I do know it will be a great adventure.

I Feel Really Lucky

Today the company that I work at just announced some really amazing things. I am proud to work for the people that lead my company. I believe in their vision. I’m not sure many people can say that about their jobs. I feel lucky to be in that position.

I’m also doing work for this company that can help them. I work in marketing. I help them communicate all these cool things that we’re doing.

Today was about Niagra.

I was there. (via the Webcast :) ) I feel lucky. I feel a sea change. I’m glad I got to help.

More on what I’m talking about at MaryMary’s house.
